Whether treating pigmentation, fine lines or wrinkles or trying to prevent them, here’s our advice for the best natural skincare routine for your 40s. Inspired by my Aunty Maria and my friend, Rosa, both in their 40s, contacted me exclaiming “I need to take five years off my face, do you have anything?” My friend Rosa is as passionate about living a toxic-free lifestyle as she is looking her best. She’s asked me to write about the best natural skincare routine for your 40’s.
At Botani, we’re prominent advocates of natural beauty, and I believe ageing gracefully is lovely, and we should all aim to embrace the inevitable and not fear it. There is absolutely nothing wrong in wanting to look your best at any age – so here are my best tips for the best natural skincare routine for your 40s!
Expert Advice From A Dermal Clinician
I recently called upon the expertise of Dermal Clinician, Rita Massimo from Body & Soul – Science of Health Therapy in Coburg and PVH Medical. Along with our Founding Naturopath, Barbara who specialises in skin conditions, I’m dishing up the best ways to look after your skin in your 40’s from experts with almost 50 years’ combined experience in treating the skin – so make yourself a cuppa and soak up the amazing advice:
Rita recommends “regular chemical exfoliation to help proliferate the Stratum Corneum. It constantly sheds and doesn’t become thickened”. Where you’ll end up with dry, flaky or merely dull, rough skin. Meaning there’s no point feeding the nourishing skin serums if it is going to hit layers of dry skin on the epidermis.
Encouraging this ‘shedding’ will leave you with healthy new cells that feel soft, ready to absorb nourishment from serums. Try a well formulated and gentle AHA preparation or for manual exfoliation plus the benefit of naturally occurring AHAs, try Botani’s Exfoliating 2 in 1 Scrub & Mask. You can also try a gentle AHA based peel at a skin clinic.
Use A Serum
Feeding the skin the right nutrients via well-formulated serums encourages the “mother cells to produce healthy daughter cells” Rita explains. To achieve brighter, younger and healthier looking skin takes only a few simple products used diligently.
“In the form of Retinol or a well-formulated stable preparation may help the basal layer of the epidermis, also known as the mother layer, to produce healthy daughter cells which work their way up to superficial layer”.
According to Rita vitamin B “helps to energise the cells and stimulate and slow the transfer of the melanosome. Ultimately assisting to reduce and prevent hyperpigmentation of the skin”. Meaning vitamin B helps reduce uneven, brown skin spots (pigmentation). Why, hello clear, even-looking skin.
Don’t forget Vitamin C. An active antioxidant integral for collagen formation. And we all know that anything that promotes healthy collagen means firmer, softer skin!
Our recommendation for all-important serums if you want the best natural skincare routine for your 40s. Botani’s Olive Skin Serum with pure active Olive Squalene which feeds your skin deep hydration, a natural plant antioxidant that’s amazingly biocompatible with our skin, too! The Acai Berry Active Antioxidant Serum is the perfect weapon to use in the morning to Kung-Fu those environmental bullies away (ecological factors contribute to premature ageing). The broad spectrum multivitamins A, C, E and F, fight the nasties, protecting and nourishing your skin while being delicious enough to almost eat (seriously, have you smelled this product? YUM).
Equip your skin with the best protection from environmental factors – sun (UVA and UVB rays), pollution, free radicals. The Acai Berry Active Antioxidant Serum is a natural multivitamin powerhouse. Rita urges everyone to PLEASE “not forget to wear a well-formulated, broad-spectrum sunscreen daily, 365 days a year, regardless of seasons or weather”. We recommend looking for a natural non-nano Zinc based sunscreen with at least SPF 15+.
Other Treatments To Consider
If you’re serious about maintaining the best natural skincare routine for your 40’s you may like to consider adding other treatments to your skincare routine. Depending on the condition of your skin, Rita recommends that in your forties, you may want to “consider other treatments (after consulting with your skin therapist) such as regular facials, Laser Genesis or skin needling”. Also, do not forget around the eyes. It can be the first area where signs of your ageing shows. Use a well-formulated eye product such as Botani’s Rescue Eye Treatment which targets fine lines and wrinkles, puffiness and dark circles.
Best Natural Skincare Routine For Your 40s
Exfoliate, feed your skin nourishing ingredients through regular use of serums, and protect your skin from the elements. And “be diligent” Rita urges. “There are no shortcuts in the program to have younger looking skin”.
A big thanks to today’s guest expert, Rita Massimo, Dermal Clinician (Bachelor in Dermal Science) from Body & Soul – The Science Of Health Therapy – Coburg and PVH Medical for her advice in treating your skin in your 40’s.
