Is Your Skin Toxic

Skin And Liver Health: Is Your Skin Toxic

Do you ever think about how the products you are using on your skin could be affecting your liver's ability to detox? Well, your skin and liver health are linked. I think the majority of people would have said the same. You see, our skin is an eliminating organ and, in addition to helping us regulate our temperature and body moisture content, the skin also assists to eliminate impurities. The liver is responsible for detoxing the majority of our body, but when it's unable to process toxins and these days in our modern environments, there is a lot to detox.

The skin provides an alternate escape route. However, the pores must be open and clear for this process to occur without event. If you are using products on your skin that acts as a barrier and block the pores, this can prevent toxins from being eliminated. With this exit blocked, the toxins will remain in the body's circulation system and will increase the risk of inflammation.

Skincare Products And Toxins

Skin rashes, acne or other skin disorders are often indicators of a toxic build-up beneath the skin's surface caused by clogged pores. One of the ways you could be potentially interfering with your skins ability to release toxins is by using petroleum-based products. Most of us come into contact with petroleum every day. Petroleum products originate from fossil fuels and include crude oil products such as gasoline, styrofoam and lubricating oils which are found in many cosmetics.

Mineral Oil And Petroleum

Mineral oil and petroleum are the primary ingredients in many beauty products claiming to moisturise our hair, skin and lips. However, by covering the skin to form a "protective" barrier, the petroleum-based products clog the pores and prevents the skin from breathing and expelling toxins.

It's also important to remember that we absorb between 60-90% of everything we put on our skin (depending on the size of the molecular structure). Once absorbed, it goes into our bloodstream.

So not only do petroleum-based products obstruct the skin from eliminating waste, they contribute to an increase in the toxic load on your liver, making your liver's job even harder.

Skin And Liver Health Tips

If you want to avoid petroleum-based products, we recommend checking the ingredients on your skin care products to see if any of these petroleum derivatives are present:

    • Mineral Oil
    • Petroleum or Petrolatum
    • Propylene Glycol
    • Isopropyl Alcohol
    • Ceresin
    • Toluene
    • Benzene
